Photograph of Dr Robert Laws being made a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG). Dr Laws is standing on a platform which is decorated with flowers and bunting whilst he receives the honour. A group can be seen gathered round the platform watching the ceremony. The CMG is an order of chivalry founded on 28 April 1818 and named in honour of two military saints, St. Michael and St. George. This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
