Description
Lil Dan'l was Rohwer's mascot; the booklet records the "little tragedies and minor comedies" of people's first year in the Rohwer incarceration camp in text and images whose lighthearted tone is often at odds with the content being presented. Topics include people's arrival from Santa Anita and Stockton; first impressions of life at the camp; furniture; fuel shortages; sports; clothing allowance; winter and summer in Arkansas; Queen Contest and Coronation Ball; the first holiday season in Rohwer, with mention of Christmas and New Year's; women's and children's activities; victory gardens; hunting kobu and mushrooms; dances; putting up wallboards in one's living quarters; and Familiar Sights, which include images of waiting and eating at the canteen, doing laundry, enlisting for military service, and newspapers. The Japanese American Archival Collection documents the people, places, and daily life of Japanese Americans, primarily those who lived in the once thriving community of pre-war Florin in the Sacramento region, as well as the conditions in American incarceration camps during World War II. The approximately 7,000 original items include personal and official letters, photographs, diaries, arts and crafts, newsletters, textiles, camps artifacts, yearbooks and other publications.
