Photo--black and white: Pomo basket makers--Mabel McKay, Laura Somersal, Myrtle Hurtado and Lucy Smith--Younger weavers carry on the traditions of their teachers. Mable McKay, Cache Creek Pomo; Laura Somersal, Geyservill Wapo and Mihilakawna (Dry Creek) Pomo; Myrtle Hurtado, Mihilakawna (Dry Creek) Pomo and Hayfork Wintun; and Lucy Smith, Mihilakawna (Dry Creek) Pomo. Pomo basket makers have long been recognized as some of the premier basket weavers in the world. Their baskets are extraordinarily beautiful and encompass a variety of shapes, function, designs and styles of weaving.
