Description
Photograph, circa 1960, of the Hotel Rialto and Rialto Cafe, located at 228 and 230 J Street. What became known as the Rialto Building replaced two structures built in the 1860s. The present buildings originally housed clothing and general merchandise stores, but for most of the 20th Century the properties housed a succession of boarding rooms and residence hotels, cafes and restaurants, taverns and liquor stores. A dozen hangers-on and pedestrians are present, and signs advertising mixed drinks and beer by the glass are visible on the windows. A column bears signs promoting the Rialto Cafe's Italian dinners, and signs for Highways 16 and 24 hang just out of reach of those stalled below.
