Description
"Deep cutting made by rain alongside an ordinary road." Close-up view of damage done to the ground by heavy rains. For years there was only one road near Blantyre to by-pass the un-navigable Shire River. This road had been surveyed by James Stewart, an ex-Indian government civil engineer who was based at Cape Maclear. Along with another Scottish engineer, James Stevenson, he spearheaded the 'Stevenson Road' to link Nyasaland [Malawi] with Tanganyika.
