Familien begyndte i Chapai Nawabganj, hvor Iver Viftrup bl.a. var engageret i opbygningsarbejde efter borgerkrigen. The family Tove & Iver Viftrup with Lars, Birgitte and Christian, July 1976. Deacon and Nurse Iver Viftrup and Deacon Tove Viftrup were sent by DSM to Bangladesh, 1972-84. The family started in Chapai Nawabganj, where Iver Viftrup was involved in reconstruction activities following the Civil War. In 1977 Iver Viftrup was founding the leprosy work DBLM at Nilphamari, and the following years this work – focusing on prevention and rehabilitation - expanded and developed under his leadership.
