Description
Photograph of a drawn portrait of Jose Castro, [s.d.]. Castro is pictured from his torso to his head and is turned to the right. He is wearing a double-breasted military jacket with shoulder bars and a collar decorated with braids of rope. He has dark hair combed back on his head and long sideburns that connect with his mustache. Photoprint reads: "was Commandante General at the time of American Conquest".
"He was born in Monterey in 1808 and died in Lower California in 1860. He was a member and president of the Diputacaion, acting governor of California, commandant-general and was in command at the time of the American conquest. He also held the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the Mexican army. His wife was Modesta, daughter of Jose Antonio Castro. Jose Castro was also, in the late 1850's, governor of Baja (Lower) California and Brigadier General in the Mexican Army. He never gave up his Mexican citizenship or army rank. In February, 1860, Governor Castro was assassinated by the bandit Marguez. Alfonso Yorba has a document written, signed, and sealed by Castro a few weeks before his death--the last known official act of the prominent California general and Governor". -- A.Y.
