Description
View down a city street lined with two-story buildings, signs, and storefront businesses at Fair Oaks Avenue and Colorado Street in Pasadena, California. Horse-drawn carts and a streetcar share the road, men and women are scattered along the sidewalks. Visible signs on buildings include "Ward Block," a bank, and O'Neill & Johnson Real Estate Insurance.
Title transcribed from front of photo-mount. Date devised by cataloger; the Jarvis studio operated from about 1886 until 1894. Printed to left of title: "B 17." Notes written on front of photo and mount: "At Colorado St. / Suesserott Bookstore / Building the Model Grocery N. Fair Oaks." Also, "See other side" is written at top of photo with an arrow pointing to a cupola on the top of a building. A note is affixed to the back of photo-mount which reads: "Arrow pointing to the cupolo (sic) of the B.F. Ball building. Gutzon Borglum, Artist and Sculptor had his Studio in this cupolo. He was the Son of a famous Early American Sculptor. Borglum was the courageous Artist who conceived the idea of carving the wars (?) on the side Tennessee Mountain. Also Heads of Washington and Lincoln of enormous size." This statement may be disputed, as Gutzon Borglum's son was named Lincoln, and it is unclear if he had a studio in downtown Pasadena.
