Photograph of a four horse express stage at La Porte equipped for snow, ca.1880. Four reigned horses wearing wooden snowshoes are visible attached to a sled at left, which contains seven men. Farther right, three men can be seen standing on a hill in front of a barn-style building. Two of the men are wearing suits, the frontmost of which holds a shovel. To the extreme right, a final man can be partially seen in the background behind the rise of the hill. What appears to be either stamped or neatly printed lettering reads along the bottom of the image "Four horse express stage at La Porte. Winter scene. Snow Shoes. Former mails were carried by men on webbed snow shoes". An earlier record in the system lists this image as a drawing.
