Bust-length portrait.
Born in 1933, in Los Angeles, California. Pursued a career in education, elected to Los Angeles Unified School Board in 1975, elected to California Senate in 1978 - first African-American woman to serve in the Senate. Member of California Legislative Black Caucus from 1978-1998. In 1998, appointed U.S. Ambassador to Federated States of Micronesia; in 2001 elected to the U.S. House, where she served until 2011.
