Hudson was appearing in court as a witness in the trial of Busby Berkeley was being tried for manslaughter after he was involved in a car crash where two women, Ada von Briesen and Peggy Daley, died in September 1935. Two trials resulted in hung juries, and he was acquitted after a third trial.
