Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: First segment (silent): Opening ceremony at the new Marine Sciences Laboratory at Moss Landing (sign for the Beaudette Foundation, scenes of young students looking at scientific equipment). Script reads, "An open house was held this weekend at the new Marine Sciences Laboratory at Moss Landing and several hundred people took advantage of the opportunity to view the facility. The building was purchased last October for slightly over $200,000 and will be used by 5 California colleges...San Jose State, San Francisco, Hayward, Fresno and Sacramento. Instruction at the laboratory will include study of marine biology, chemical and physical oceanography, and meteorology as related to the sea. Members of the faculty were on hand this weekend to show the visitors around and the new Director of the facility, Dr. John Harville, from San Jose State College, was asked what this new Science Lab would mean to San Jose..." Segment 2: Director John Harville on camera talking about how the new marine science center will benefit students, colleges, and community (sound). Segment 3 (silent): scenes of an airplane at night, parked on tarmac, couples milling around the plane in formal dress, dancing on the tarmac. Script reads, "Hawker Sea Fury Unveiled. A high powered racing plane was unveiled this weekend. Flying tentatively under the name of 'Miss San Jose,' the airship may take a shot at five air racing speed records. The plane, a British built Hawker Sea Fury, is owned by Grant Weaver of the Pacific Air Academy at the San Jose Airport. The plane can top 500 miles an hour. Its first test will come next May during the Los Angeles National Air Races on the Memorial Day weekend. Miss San Jose had an elaborate coming out party. Couples danced on the airport runway adjacent to the old terminal building. She will attempt to crack five speed records, one of them held by the German Luftwaffe, set in 1939. Three others are course records...most of this aerial flying is done over a 9-mile course under 100 feet. The plane is also to compete for a new record in a west to east transcontinental flight." Reel 2 (silent): External view of Forest Ave. Convalescent Hospital, interior shots of ribbon cutting ceremony, tour of facility. Script reads, "Convalescent hospital opens. City, County and State officials joined this afternoon in opening a new convalescent hospital in San Jose. The hospital at 2065 Forest Avenue near O'Connor Hospital was formally opened this afternoon. San Jose Mayor Joseph Pace wielded a pair of oversize scissors to cut a red ribbon. He was assisted by Assemblyman Al Alquist, State Senator Clarke Bradley, Supervisor Ralph Merkins and the Maid of Santa Clara County, Helen Miller. The facility has 35,000 square feet of floor space. It is a 142-bed hospital, one of the largest in the San Jose area. The rooms are equipped with low contour beds, and a television set for each. For the seriously ill, oxygen is available for immediate bedside administration at all times. The hospital is designed for the chronically ill, and for those too well to be in a regular hospital, but not well enough to go home to resume normal activities. Diets are individually prepared, and served from a mobile heated unit. There are small dining rooms for those well enough to walk to meals. For sunny days, a courtyard with patio furniture and umbrellas. Being ill is still no pleasure...but it can be bearable."
