The Folsom Water Power Company’s granite dam can be seen in this circa-1895 photograph. Resting some 210 feet above sea level, the dam was 89 feet high, 650 feet wide, contained 48,500 cubic yards of granite, and could withstand up to 7,979 tons in force. It was built, in part, by convicts at the Folsom State Prison, who were paid 50 cents a day for their efforts.
