Description
Black and white photograph showing a head and shoulders portrait of a Nigerian boy with scars on his head, which have been marked with a cross. The caption to this image reads: "Ayala - 6 severe wounds - see scars on head and shoulder. Left in swamp 24 hours after wounding. Received by us 5 days later in dreadfully septic state. Recovered completely." Ayala would have been brought to the hospital at Ama Achara in southeast Nigeria run by the Primitive Methodist Missionary Society. This photograph was pasted into one of a series of exercise book albums created by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Ama Achara Methodist Hospital.
