Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Los Alamitos Race Course held its first pari mutuel met in 1951. The race track was owned by Frank Vessels Sr., a general contractor who built the race course on his 435-acre ranch in Cypress, California. In the mid-1980s the course was bought by Frank Allred and in 2014 the track was expanded. The track hosts thoroughbred and quarter horse racing. Photograph caption dated November 24, 1964 reads "Los Alamitos bugler sounds the opening blast as initial day race of present quarter-horse racing season gets under way. Racing at the popular Southland track continues through Dec. 22."
