Description
This hand-made water-cooled carbon microphone was used in Charles "Doc" Herrold's first broadcasting station, at his College of Wireless in the Garden City Bank Building in downtown San Jose. The carbon microphone was placed in series with the antenna-ground circuit and carried the antenna current; as a result, the carbon would get too hot to hold; water was used to cool it, through two tubes at the back.
