Description
Photograph of Hamburger's Department Store seen from down a very busy street, ca.1890-1899. There are many horse-drawn wagons, cable cars, and pedestrians in the scene. In the street at center, a railcar is visible. At least four horse-drawn carriages can be seen as well. A man on a bicycle is also visible on the road moving rapidly to the right. Pedestrians flood the sidewalks on both sides of the street. Large buildings line both sides of the street. On the left, large striped awnings protrude from each of the buildings over the sidewalk. In the background at center, the sign "Hamburgers" can be seen at the top of a large structure.
Legible signs include: "Hamburger's", ..."tt & Co.", "Dr. Lowder, Dentist", "1888, Schumacher Block", "Dry goods, notions, stationery", "See us for overcoats", ..."Phillip's Block"..., "Harris & Frank, London Clothing Co."...[?], "J.M. Hale Co., 109", "111, H.J. Whitley Co., 111", "113, The 5 & 10¢ Store"[?], "Grand Ave." streetcar, ..."Patent Office", ..."Parlors"..., "Los Angeles National Bank", ..."restaurant, bakery", "The Merchant's Barber shop", "Up to date, Crandall Aylsworth Company, bargains".
