Not long after Joan Barry filed the first paternity suit against Chaplin, federal prosecutors brought Mann Act charges against Charlie Chaplin in relation to Barry; he was acquitted. Photograph caption dated April 4, 1944 reads, "Charlie Chaplin was solemn in Federal Court yesterday during final arguments in his trial on Mann Act charges involving Joan Barry. Here he is pictured during a morning recess, with spectators in the background, as he waited for the court to reconvene."
