Title
Lightning-struck redwoods on Swithenbank property, 0.4 mile north of mouth of Dean Creek 4 miles N. of Garberville. View from Redwood Highway at station 261+26, elevation on Highway 333 ft. Trees struck July 24, 1937. Tree A, 9 ft. diameter at breast height, had about 20' broken off top, the rest, 2/3 to ground was split through center and each half bend away from the other. Tree B has a narrow scar from top to about 1/3+ down. Tree C has a large slab knocked off about 50' from top. A and B were sound topped. C still has a short dry spike at the top. In the same storm a redwood "snag", living, on Sproule Creek was set afire, as was another living redwood snag south of Bear Buttes. See also #6402. All tree trees between 175 and 225' high.
