Photo--black and white: Family photo of the Isaiah Thomas and Eliza Jane Martin Thomasfamily, one of the pioneer families of Green Valley California. Pictured L to R, back row: Henry Rambo (b May 7, 1873), Zachariah, Samuel, Isaac (b Mar 21, 1850), John Elton, Alfred Ross and Jacob. Front row: Rachel Armenta (b1876), Mary Ellen(b Dec 17, 1856), Isaiah (father), Eliza Jane (mother) (1828-1924), Sarah Ann (May 24, 1855) and Matilda Sophronia (June 30, 1870). Isaiah Thomas was born in Champaign County, Ohio in 1826. Eliza JaneThomas was born in Hancock County, Indiana in 1829. They came to California in 1854. In 1858 he purchased 405 acres in Green Valley. Isaiah was a successful rancher who tok considerable interest in public and private life. He was a member of the first Green Valley School Board of Trustees. Family lore tells of daughter Sarah, "the best horse woman in California" as a young girl rode her horse to Petaluma once a week for the family mail. Isaish was fond of saying that they arrived in California in 1854 with two children, two oxen, two cows and $2.75.
