Description
Photograph shows four young girls reading next to two large redwood trees. There is a bookcase with books on it next to one of the large redwoods. They are probably at the YWCA's Camp Ayun Mapu in Big Basin, California. On verso: "Y.W.C.A. San Jose, Cal" stamped in blue, and "Sample's Photo Service Phone Ballard 8440 William St., San Jose L 29 1938". Photograph has a large circle cut out of the middle and the circle is missing. The circle seems to have been a young lady on the front and had the complete date stamped in it on the back. There is a pinhole in the left bottom. The YWCA's Camp Ayun Mapu at Big Basin near Boulder Creek attracted about 150 girls for two week sessions in the summer. From Fran Smith, "Breaking Ground:The Daring Women of the YWCA in the Santa Clara Valley, 1905-2005," (2005), p. 51. Big Basin became a state park in 1902 1930; 1931; 1932; 1933; 1934; 1935; 1936; 1937; 1938; 1939 Scanned with Microtek Scanmaker 1000XL Pro; as a 600 dpi TIFF image in 24-bit RGB color.
