Description
Shown is a brochure circa 1960 for the Capitol Park Hotel located on the corner of Ninth and L streets, across from Capitol Park. The building was erected in 1912 and was known as the Capitol Park Hotel beginning in the 1960s. The brochure claims that the hotel was a part of the "Renaissance of downtown Sacramento," a reference to the redevelopment project that occurred in the 1950s and into the 1960s on Sacramento's West End. The project sought to revitalize downtown Sacramento's image, but in doing so resulted in the displacement of thousands of citizens, most of whom were people of color. This made way for the development of Capitol Mall Boulevard and Interstate 5's travel route. The map on the back of the brochure outlines the layout of Sacramento's West End post-redevelopment.
