Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Group of people emerging from a charter bus in at Vasona Park. Script reads, "The governor's Advisory Committee on California Beauty and its chairman, Mrs. Edmund G. Brown, made a rather hurried swing through Santa Clara County this morning during a day of Bay Area park visitations. The twelve member entourage arrived via special charter bus at Vasona County Park about one o'clock this afternoon. On hand to greet Mrs. Brown and her committee was Chairman of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors Charles Quinn. Supervisor Quinn and County Parks and Recreation Director Robert Amyx conducted a short tour of the park facilities. The visit only lasted about 15 minutes. Vasona Park has been chosen by the committee as one of the outstanding regional recreational developments in the state. Prior to the committee's visit to Vasona, it paid a short visit to the new Campbell City Park." Segment 2 (silent): Fire officials examining the scene of a fire, building damage. Script reads, "Fire did an estimated 10,000 dollars damage to a Mountain View school this morning. Engines responded to the Theuerkauf School at 1695 San Luis in Mountain View shortly after 11:30. The blaze did extensive damage in a kindergarten classroom, and spread into an adjacent room. No one was in the classroom at the time of the fire. Fire investigators say the blaze probably began in a wastebasket, possibly from a lighted match tossed in by a youngster. Flames scorched the walls and spread into the ceiling of the room. Firemen said if they had been a few moments later, the flames would have broken out and been difficult to control. None of the schools' children were injured." Segment 3 (silent + sound): Shots of a public utilities commission meeting on fluoridation in municipal auditorium, with small number in the audience. Followed by interview with Dr. George Waldbott about whether his books have been banned. Story reads, "The controversy over fluoridation of drinking water began making waves here again today. The Public Utilities Commission opened a three-day series of hearings in which anti-fluoridationists will present their case. The City of San Jose has petitioned the PUC to force the San Jose Water Works to fluoridate its drinking water. The anti-fluoridationists wheeled in some of their big guns, including Dr. George Waldbott of Detroit, author of several books attacking fluoridation. Santa Clara County Dental Association attorney John Ball questioned Dr. Waldbott about his books. Waldbott later explains what he called a ban on his books by public libraries. The hearing had its fiery moments and, as usual, the sparks were provided by Alexander McKay, arch foe of fluoridation here. McKay called attorney Ball's questions 'idiotic' and 'childish.' but Commissioner George Grover squelched McKay and warned him about name-calling. The hearing continues tomorrow at 9:30." Reel 2: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with Scott Stanley, who claims his organization has checked the background of Cesar Chavez and his associates and that they all have known associations with communists and that there are "top communists" working with the Delano strikers. "This is a Marxist revolutionary effort." Script reads, "Another charge of communism in California came from the youthful editor of American Opinion magazine, the voice of the John Birch Society. Scott Stanley, in San Jose to appear before the right-wing Peninsula Forum, said his magazine had reporters on the Delano grape strike march to Sacramento and that the marchers were led by known revolutionaries." Segment 2 (silent): Soldiers being reviewed, marching, marching band. Script reads, "Several hundred uniformed troops marched at Santa Clara University this morning...for the annual President's Review and Awards assembly. The University's Army Reserve Officer Training Corps assembled for the annual inspection. 16 future army officers were decorated for outstanding service while they were in the Corps. First awards were presented by University President Father Patrick Donohoe. Dennis Sullivan of San Jose was presented with the medal of Santa Barbara, for being the outstanding senior cadet. Awards completed, it was time for the assembled troops to pass in review before Father Donohoe and Colonel Robert O'Brian, head of the university ROTC program. " Segment 3 (silent): Boxing match between Bobby Scanlon and Luis Molina - action in the ring. Script reads, "Last night at the Civic Auditorium, Irish Bobby Scanlon won a strange, but decisive technical decision over 6th ranked welterweight Luis Molina. Officials stopped the fight following the 9th round, after Scanlon, leading on all three cards, suffered a deep gash over his right eye. The gash was caused by a head butt. It was Scanlon's first victory over the scrappy Molin. IN the wild 10 round preliminary to the main event, unbeaten Ray Echavarria of San Jose fought to a draw with Idaho's Pete Gonzales in a real crowd pleaser." Reel 3: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with private investigator Sam Arvid about how often wiretapping takes place locally and whether it's common in political campaigns. Script reads, "The San Jose headquarters of the Christopher for Governor Committee today charged that telephones in the headquarters had been tapped. County campaign chairman -- Assemblyman George Millias -- made the charge at a news conference shared with Assemblymen William Bagley and Allan Pattee. A private investigator called in to check the telephones confirmed that there was technical evidence the phones have been tapped, although no recording or eavesdropping device could be found. The investigator -- Sam Arvid -- said such tapping in San Jose is common place and that more than two dozen investigators make their livings performing such electronic snooping. Christopher headquarters people said they became suspicious when privileged information began appearing outside their organization." Segment 2 (sound): Interview with Robert Kjaerbye, who defends himself against allegations he has a criminal record: "I was framed because I had information on the governor..." Script reads, "A San Jose man campaigning for the Republican Central Committee today denied he is ineligible to run because of serving a prison sentence for a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Robert Kjaerbye insists he was the victim of a political frame.."
