Description
Contains moving images of the Southern Pacific "Fresno Flyer" and "Louis Chess Special." The first portion includes shots of the Southern Pacific "Fresno Flyer" Excursion, dated March 24, 1957, from Oakland to Fresno, California. The excursion was pulled by Southern Pacific Locomotive No. 4443, a GS-4 class 4-8-4. (This locomotive was featured in the opening credits of the movie “Pal Joey,” starring Rita Hayworth and Frank Sinatra.) Film shots include the train at Oakland Pier, Oakland street-running, Niles Junction, Niles Canyon, Altamont Pass, Fresno, and numerous photo run-bys. There are also shots of the Fresno skyline, freight yard, and the San Joaquin Daylight – with a Dome-Lounge Car – at the Fresno passenger station. The second portion includes a fan-trip organized on June 2, 1957 to celebrate the retirement of T. Louis Chess, the former San Francisco district passenger agent commonly referred to as "Mr. SP." The trip organizers brought Southern Pacific steam locomotive No. 2248, a 4-6-0 built in 1896, out of retirement for the special run. The trip ran from San Francisco to Los Gatos, and features shots of the San Francisco 3rd and Townsend Depot, the observation car owned by the Pacific Coast Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, a marching band in Los Gatos, a visit to Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad, and a commuter train pulled by a Fairbanks-Morse Train Master Locomotive.
