Turner was only 19 years old. The marriage shocked and surprised many and was highly publicized. Their marriage was turbulent and abusive and lasted just shy of seven months. Photograph caption dated February 13, 1940 reads "Lana Turner pins a boutonniere to the coat of her husband, Artie Shaw, as they honeymooned today in Beverly Hills following an early morning elopement to Las Vegas. The 'college sweetheart' and swing band maestro said they decided to see the minister only yesterday. The wedding was a big surprise to Hollywood."
