Description
Biography/History: Tom Walsh was born in Washington, DC. He was first recruited to work for the HERE International by Vincent Cerebella in 1987. Tom was eventually assigned to organize the Century Boulevard area of Los Angeles and to revitalize HERE Local 814, which was in decline. Tom became trustee of the local and was elected president in 1995, ousting the old-guard leadership. At the time of this interview, Tom was president of UNITE HERE Local 11.
Scope/Content: Interview Contents: Organizing in high school and college through solidarity movements with Central America and South Africa — Protest against Ronald Reagan’s firing of air traffic controllers’ after they went on strike in 1981 — Beginning work with HERE International — Organizing projects in DC, New York, Baltimore, and Chicago — Relocating to Los Angeles — Canvassing nonunion hotel workers along Century Boulevard — Losing his first National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) elections — Incompetence of Local 814’s existing leadership and their unwillingness to fight — Local’s trusteeship in 1995 — Organizing a geographic campaign in Lennox, CA — Working with Kurt Petersen to move Local 814’s toward organizing and fighting for workers — Mobilizing Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) workers to attend city council meetings — Working with Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) to win a worker retention ordinance at the airport — Building power for achieving change — Marriage and the impact of union organizing on his family life — Future of Local 11 — Recognizing the value in all forms of work.
