Photograph was edited for publication purposes Spade Cooley, born Donnel Clyde Cooley, was a Western Swing musician and band leader best known for his hit, 'Shame on You.' In addition to his music career, Cooley appeared in several Western films and hosted a television variety show, 'The Hoffman Hayride' also known as 'The Spade Cooley Show' which was broadcast on KTLA from the Santa Monica Pier Ballroom. In 1961, Cooley was convicted for the murder of his second wife, Ella Mae, and sentenced to life in prison. He died in 1969. Photograph caption dated July 29, 1954 reads "Some like it hot, some like it sweet, some like it 'crazy-cool with a real gone jivey beat.' But whatever your individual taste in dance music, you will find it if you come out to Devonshire Downs and 'dig that craa-a-zy Spade'...Spade Cooley, that is, and his versatile band. Down-beat is set for nine tomorrow night in the huge Exhibits Building at Valley Fair Grounds, 18000 Devonshire Downs, Northridge. Left to right are Jake Truss, Spade Cooley. Proceeds go to Encino Community Center."
