Description
Margaret is related by marriage to the John Nelson Family who built and ran the Olema Hotel from 1877 to 1942. Margaret recounts her experience as a teacher of grades one through eight in the one-room Olema schoolhouse. For three years she boarded in the hotel where she met her future husband, the grandson of John Nelson. She provides detail on the hotel and the Nelson Family, her bedroom on the top floor, and the Ford automobile that met the train each day. From 1974 to 1984, Carla Ehat, with partner Anne Kent, and later Genevieve Martinelli, interviewed a broad spectrum of Marin County's long-time residents, from ranchers to politicians, including descendants of early pioneer families. This program was co-sponsored by the Marin County Free Library and the Moya Library in Ross. The resulting archive, consisting of nearly 300 recordings and their corresponding transcriptions, are housed in the Anne T. Kent California Room at the Civic Center branch of the Marin County Free Library.
