Photograph of horses moving out to begin moving this early combine. The machine is operated by horse power alone and was later adapted to include a steam engine. Published: N. E. Cal F868 B8 K87 from Uncle Bruce's Diary, 1966. The horses are shown moving out to begin moving this early combine. Clearly visible is the jerk line Uncle Bruce used to control the team. The blades which cut the stalks of wheat are on the other side of the combine. The machine is operated by horse power alone and was later adapted to include a steam engine. Note the sack of wheat on the platform in back of the sack sewer. The other two men shown are the "gigger" and the "separation tender." Not shown is the "Sack buck" who loaded the sacks of wheat on a wagon.
