Description
Microfilm of assorted notebooks containing the research of Stalney Snow Ivins, most of which was gathered between 1926 and 1964. The research consists of handwritten excerpts from a variety of books, newspapers, diaries, and other original sources. The research focuses on all aspects of the Mormon experience from the 1840s to the 1960s, and primarily covers events in Utah and the western United States. Topics covered include Church history, marriage and polygamy, the Southern Utah Mission, the Mountain Meadows Massacre, and Indian affairs. Many notable individuals are mentioned, including Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Hosea Stout, John D. Lee, Charles Lowell Walker, John Taylor, Sidney Rigdon, and Elias Smith. The material is on a total of 11 reels of microfilm and arranged as follows: Reel 1 -- Volumes 1-4 of Ivins's book research, compiled at the New York Public Library, Library of Congress, the Utah State Historical Society, the Council Bluffs Public Library, and Coe College at Yale University Reel 2 -- continuation of volume 4 and volumes 5-9 Reel 3 -- continuation of volume 9 and volumes 10-15 Reel 4 -- continuation of volume 15 and volumes 16-17, as well as a section labeled "Miscellaneous Book Notes 1-5 " Reel 5 -- end of notebook 5 and transcripts from the Deseret News, the Salt Lake Daily Telegraph, and the Deseret Evening News (1856-1876) Reel 6 -- transcripts from the Deseret Evening News (1876-1888) Reel 7 -- transcripts from the Deseret Evening News (1888-1912) Reel 8 -- transcripts from the Deseret Evening News (1912-1932), notes labeled "Journal of Discourses," and transcripts of the Salt Lake Herald, including the Utah Evening Mail and Salt Lake Evening Chronicle (1873-1884) Reel 9 -- transcripts from the Salt Lake Herald (1885-1911) and the Salt Lake Daily Tribune (1871-1883) Reel 10 -- transcripts from the Salt Lake Daily Tribune (1883-1914), the Deseret News (1932-1943), miscellaneous newspap;All inquiries about these items should be directed to the H. Stanley Snow Ivins (1891-1967) was born in St. George, Utah. His father, Anthony W. Ivins, was made president of the Juarez Stake in 1895 and the family lived in Mexico until 1907. Stanley earned a bachelors degree from the Utah Agricultural College and a masters degree in animal husbandry from Iowa State College. He was actively involved in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints until the death of his father in 1934. He was an avid researcher of Mormon history and published twelve articles on Mormons in the west between 1943 and 1957. He was made a lifetime member of the Utah State Historical Society shortly before his death in 1967.
