Description
One penmanship book entitled Payson, Dunton & Scribner's National System of Penmanship, Tracing and Short Course, No. 2, by G.H. Shattuck and A.S. Manson, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Company, New York and Chicago, 1875. This book is 24 numbered pages in length, and is comprised of 24 lessons. Below each example are 8 rows of matching blue printed letters to be traced. The lessons contain letters, letter combinations, words and numbers. The front cover features an ornate decorative frame surrounding the title. On the inside of the front cover are printed instructions for correct sitting and penholding positions. These are accompanied by two images, one of a seated boy, and another of a seated girl , each writing at a desk. An explanation of the series and the books within each number, in addition to directions for use within the classroom, is printed on the inside of the back cover. A publisher's advertisement for "Primary Short Course of Penmanship adapted for use with Payson, Dunton & Scribner's National System" is on the back cover. "George Emerson, 9 yrs." is written in ms., in ink, at the top of the front cover. "Spring 1877" is written in ms., in ink, on the first page. All of the exercises and lessons have been completed in ink.
