Description
Wooden oil Photograph of a cluster of oil wells in Los Angeles, showing paved road and with trees visible in the distance, ca.1910. A paved road runs from the leftmost foreground to the center of the image, where it disappears behind an oil well. Several oil wells stand in rows to each side of the road, with two rows of oil wells visible on each side. Two small, dwelling-like structures with paned windows, shingled roofs, and clapboard veneers sit in the middleground among the oil wells, one on each side of the road. The one on the right side is smaller and lightly colored, while the structure on the left side is two stories tall and slightly darker in color. The right foreground of the image is occupied by a portion of a small pond which is bisected horizontally by a low wooden fence. Trees are visible in the background. Note from back states, "The oil wells cover a large territory in the western part of the city and gives employment to a lot of men. Los Angeles is quite proud of this industry".
