Photograph caption dated August 8, 1932 reads, "In the foreground of the crowds at Olympic Stadium (the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum) sit athletes who have finished their competitions or await contests to come. With varied expressions, they watch their teammates and their rivals in the battles of strength, skill, and courage. Some of the faces are tense with suspense of a close race and some are spread with smiles over the triumph of a friends. And from the throng come heartfelt cheers of encouragement."
