Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Segment 1 (silent): Shots of an ambulance, emergency crews at base of tall wooded cliff, ambulance backing out of area. Script reads, "Alum Rock Girl. A young Cupertino girl narrowly escaped death this afternoon when she fell 100 feet down a sheer cliff in Alum Rock Park. 12-year old Pamela Branaman of 10400 Oak Drive is in satisfactory condition tonight at Alexian Brothers Hospital. She was hiking with three other young members of the Alum Rock Youth Science Institute when she lost her footing. Lalo Rodriguez of San Jose was picnicking with his family when he heard Pamela's screams. He rushed to her, just a few feet from crowded picnic tables. Following the mishap her three companions found they could neither climb up nor down the near-vertical cliff. Assistant Park Zookeeper Michael Healey, who is specially trained in mountain rescue, climbed to the trio. He and two park policemen spent more than two hours removing them to safety." Segment 2 (sound): California Highway Patrol officer standing in front of patrol car, talking about increasing men on Highway 101 and Route 17 in order to reduce traffic accidents. Script reads, "The California Highway Patrol is beefing up its forces throughout the Bay Area. The San Jose patrol plans to increase its forces by 40 percent later this year. Officer Hank Rosenswag told us how, and why..." Segment 3 (silent): Man receiving the Bronze Star. Script reads, "The Bronze Star for Heroism in Combat was today awarded to the parents of a San Jose man killed in action in Vietnam. The award was presented posthumously to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Amato of 354 North 15th Street, parents of Richard Amato. The presentation was made at the Amato home by Lieutenant Colonel Curtis E. Flint. Young Amato was killed in January 11th, while charging a bunker occupied by Viet Cong. His act of heroism contributed to the destruction and capture of a large Viet Cong force. " Segment 4 (silent): Track and field event. Tommie Smith competing in long jump, winning on the track. Script reads, "The San Jose State Spartans overhauled the Fresno State Bulldogs in a dual track meet this afternoon at Spartan Stadium. The final score 111 to 34. Outstanding performer in the meet, as he has been all season, was Tommie Smith. Smith set a new school and stadium record in the long jump with a mighty leap of 25 feet 11 inches, the best in the nation this year. He also won the 220-yard dash, pacing off the distance in 20.4 seconds, two tenths of a second off the world's record. The Oakland speedster also anchored a victorious 440-yard relay team." 4/23/66 A-D 449 100' SOF VIETNAM
