Description
A full-length oval-shaped studio portrait of Union Private John Edward Cutter of the 23rd Maine Infantry Regiment, standing at attention in front of a backdrop of a camp and cannon. Cutter is wearing his hat and holding his rifle at his right side. The buttons on his coat, his belt buckle, and a few other small details have been picked out with gold paint. The image is in a beige mounting with gilt decorations.
Ms. note on verso reads "Private John Edward Cutter, Co. E. 23rd. Maine Regiment. Taken at Chain Bridge, Va. May 1862." A note in a different hand reads "Natalie's Grandfather".
