Army Corp. Dale N. McCuistion had been convicted of of black market activities in Turkey, where he had served eight months and would have been required to serve three more years if the $17,500 fine had not been paid.
Photograph caption dated November 13, 1964 reads, "Happy Mother. Mrs. Margaret Powell, Van Nuys, talks elatedly with a well-wisher after it was learned the $17,500 find necessary to obtain release of her son Dale N. McCuistion, from a Turkish jail has been raised by private contributions."
