Close-up view of the branding iron and cup used by Father Junipero Serra at the San Gabriel Mission, which was founded by him on September 8, 1771. He was then Presidente of the California Missions Chain, and San Gabriel was the fourth mission in the 21-mission chain in Alta California. The padres supported themselves and their community by raising cattle and other agricultural pursuits.
