Photograph of a small group crossing the Rukuru River in northern Malawi. A group of people can be seen in the middle ground of the picture crossing the river, they appear to be carrying items suspended on wooden poles. There are tall trees on the far bank of the river. This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
