Photograph mounted on photo stock. Notes from Reverse: " L2012-03-10, George Downing Patten & Eva May Besse Patten, Callie Patten's Mother and Pa. in 189-" George Downing Patten was born in 1847 and was a native of Ohio. He was a member of the Grand Army post, having served through the Civil War in an Iowa regiment. Mr. Patten moved to Pasadena around 1885, and had previously lived in Reading Kansas, where he was involved in the cattle business. Mr. Patten was mayor of Pasadena from 1898 to 1900. He was a partner in the Patten & Davies Lumber & Fuel Co., with yards in Pasadena and Los Angeles. He was vice president of the Pasadena Savings, Trust & Safe Deposit Co., a director in the First National Bank, and was also involved in the American Girl Mining Corporation. Mr. Patten was very involved with the Masons, belonging to all the local Masonic bodies, as a thirty-second degree Mason. Mr. Patten passed away on May 14, 1902 at the age of 54 (Ex-Mayor Patten dies this afternoon, 1902).
