Description
Key Words: June Vail, Girl Scouts Melvin Butler introduced a panel of speakers at the dedication ceremony for June Vail Park. The speakers included Mayor Bertye Smith, Patricia Newton, and John Vail. The dedication begins with a flag ceremony and the pledge of allegiance led by Girl Scout Troop 111. Mayor Bertye Smith read a tribute written about June Vail by Judy Newels. She gives information about the park including its cost, size, and plans for construction. Patricia Newton speaks on behalf of the Girl Scouts and praises Vail for her service to the Girl Scouts organization. “[June Vail’s] greatest love was the outdoors. She nurtured and instilled that love in all of her girls, and their lives are infinitely richer for it. I really can’t believe there is a better way to honor her and to honor her memory than naming a little bit of the out of doors in Claremont for her.” The Girl Scouts perform a song, “Let Me Be a Little Kinder.” John Vail (June’s husband) ends the dedication by saying a few words about June. A representative from Girl Scout Troop 573 dedicated a Mondale pine tree to be planted in the park.
