Description

John George Agar (1921-2002) was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He married 17-year-old Shirley Temple on September 19, 1945, and retired from the Army in 1946. Agar became an actor, and the couple made two films together, "Fort Apache" and "Adventure in Baltimore". Agar and Temple were married five years, and had one daughter together, Linda Susan Agar. The marriage became troubled, and they filed for divorce on December 5, 1949; it was finalized exactly one year to the day. On January 1950, just a month after her divorce, Temple met WWII Navy Silver Star hero Charles Alden Black, and the two married on December 16, 1950. Agar also re-married following his divorce from Temple; he wed model Loretta Barnett Combs in 1951.
Photograph caption dated December 5, 1949 reads, "Signature That Ended A 'Perfect Marriage' - Flanked by attorneys, America's "little sweetheart" signs property agreement, ending Hollywood's "perfect marriage." Grant Cooper, left, and George Stahlman, in rear, are her attorneys. Clore Warne, right, is counsel for Agar."
