Photograph shows the flume tender and his wife standing in front of their cabin on the flume line from Providence Mill to Chico, a Sierra Lumber Company operation. The 'flume tenders' or 'lumber herders' patrolled the flume to clear lumber jams or repair the flumes. They also controlled switches in the flumes so lumber could be bypassed. These points were linked to the sawmill and the valley terminals by telegraph - by 1891 this system was changed to a telephone system.
