Description
"One Hundred Years of Progress" was the theme chosen for the celebration known as "Roarin Camp" that took place near Southside Park in 1939. Originally planned as a fiesta to commemorate Captain John Sutter's arrival in Sacramento in 1839, the summer event included activities at Sutter's Fort, a homecoming week, historical parade as well as a ceremony replicating Sutter's arrival. Hundreds of locals and visitors dressed in period garb and can be seen milling about the facsimile mining town that included a Mexican village, Indian village, dance hall, theater and other buildings representative of the time. This black and white postcard features a real photograph with no additional tinting or color work, the exception to normal cards of the era which were color-toned and produced with a linen-like finish.
