Description
Front: Interior shot of the home of James A. Culbertson, located at 235 North Grand Ave., and designed and built by famous architectural duo Greene and Greene. The house was originally built in 1902, with additions made in 1907. Major alterations were made in 1953 by architects Whitney Smith and Wayne Williams. James A. Culbertson was a wealthy businessman whose main business was the lumber trade. Among other things, Culbertson donated funds to the building of the original Throop Institute, which later would become the California Institute of Technology (or, CalTech). According to Harold Carew's "History of Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley," "Much of the success and advancement of the school is attributable directly to his earnest efforts in its behalf." (Vol. III, Pg. 404) Reverse: In green ink "original". Stamped in black ink is the number "1452 24", and also "This photograph may not be repro-/duced without written permission / Julius Shulman /P.O. Box 8656 / Cole Station / Los Angeles 46, Calif".
