The birth of the Terminal Island Naval Shipyard. This aerial view of Terminal Island taken on August 1, 1941, shows the site of the shipyard. Construction of the drydock was begun in September 1940. From a group of unfinished drydocks on the mud flats of the island, the Terminal Island Naval Shipyard was built. Hundreds of ships were built here during World War II.
