"Group of settlers, Kikuyu." Group portrait of eleven European men next to a shallow river. They are some of the earliest European settlers in the district which suffered from some unrest with the Kikuyu and the Maasai. The Kikuyu mission was going through a process of transferring into the care of the Church of Scotland after the death of Mr Thomas Watson in 1900. The Church sent out Dr David C R Scott and Dr Karl Uffman, 1901, to take on the running of the mission. Dr Uffman’s Brother, Hans, also settled in the area and became one of the first European planters at Kikuyu. This image is from a collection of photographs which possibly belonged to Dr Karl Uffman, son of Dr Henry Uffman of the Leprosy Asylum in Purulia, West Bengal. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and joined the Kikuyu mission from 1901 to 1905.
