Description
Peter was a lawyer and conservationist who dedicated more than 20 years of his life to public service in California. He was on the Mill Valley Planning Commission (1954-1956); served as Mayor of Mill Valley (1956-1960); was a member of the Marin County Board of Supervisors (1962-1969); and a California State Senator (1970-1978). Called the "Mr. Integrity" of local politics, Peter was a driving force behind critical conservation legislation, locally and statewide. A major accomplishment was creating the "Save Our Seashore" organization, convincing Congress to secure land for the Point Reyes National Seashore. Here, he talks about his belief that individual citizens can make a difference in shaping their community through voting, letter writing, and running for office. From 1974 to 1984, Carla Ehat, with partner Anne Kent, and later Genevieve Martinelli, interviewed a broad spectrum of Marin County's long-time residents, from ranchers to politicians, including descendants of early pioneer families. This program was co-sponsored by the Marin County Free Library and the Moya Library in Ross. The resulting archive, consisting of nearly 300 recordings and their corresponding transcriptions, are housed in the Anne T. Kent California Room at the Civic Center branch of the Marin County Free Library.
