Description
Black and white photograph showing the opening ceremony at the Methodist Church in Ikot Ekpene, Nigeria. A Nigerian gentleman stands with a piece of paper and speaks at the entrance to the church. Two men in white uniforms also stand in the entrance wearing white uniforms, and Reverend W Groves stands next to a church arch. Two Nigerian young men in scout uniforms stand next to the entrance to the church. Nigerian soldiers and European clergy watch the speech. The Lieutenant Governor of Southern Provinces of Nigeria, Captain Walter Buchanan-Smith, opened the church in December 1933. Captain Buchanan-Smith stands next to the Nigerian speaker. This photograph was pasted into one of a series of exercise book albums created by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Ama Achara Methodist Hospital in southeast Nigeria run by the Methodist Missionary Society.
