Description
A rendering of the Chemistry Building, taken from the southern edge of the East Lawn, looking north. This building echoes some of the extended architectural vocabulary of the late campus standard, with patterned concrete block, dentil mouldings under the concrete roof lines, angular arches, and the use of the one-story building to give a more human scale to the larger building. The architectural firm Albert C. Martin and Associates was formed in 1906, and is still managed today by the same family. The firm was one of the most prolific designers of commercial structures in downtown Los Angeles in the mid-twentieth century. Some of their notable buildings include the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power headquarters, ARCO Plaza, and the master plan for Westlake Village. The firm also designed the Woodhouse laboratory at UCSB in 1963.
