Jean Lipman-Blumen discusses her book, “Connective Leadership.” She begins by detailing three stages of leadership. The first stage was in pre-recorded history when leaders protected their followers by keeping them behind geographical boundaries. Stage two included “command and control” forms of leadership in which leaders acted autonomously. She goes on to explain that her book examines a third stage of leadership. In this third stage of leadership, leaders go to great lengths to connect their vision with the visions of their followers. To provide an example of a connective leader, Lipman-Blumen discusses the King of Jordan. Also in this interview she explains what “connective leadership” means to the American political system.
